Tuesday, September 15th, from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm – Piazza Belgiojoso, Milan
Five years after the inauguration of Milan’s first monument dedicated to a historical female figure, Fondazione Brivio Sforza and Le Dimore del Quartetto invite the public to Il Salotto di Cristina, an evening dedicated to memory, music and dialogue.
In the heart of Piazza Belgiojoso, the statue of Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso, sculpted by Giuseppe Bergomi, becomes the starting point for a public gathering that intertwines conversations, testimonies and music, offering an opportunity to rediscover the legacy of an extraordinary woman: a patriot, journalist, entrepreneur, patron of the arts and a leading figure in 19th-century European cultural life.
The evening, hosted by journalist and screenwriter Francesca Priori, opens with remarks by Alessandro Brivio Sforza, President of Fondazione Brivio Sforza, Francesca Moncada di Paternò, Founder and President of Le Dimore del Quartetto, and Anna Scavuzzo, Deputy Mayor of the City of Milan, and concludes with remarks by Tommaso Sacchi, Councillor for Culture of the City of Milan.
One of the highlights of the event is the presentation of the Radio 24 podcast “Mi chiamo Cristina”. Rossana De Michele (director, producer, author, and television and radio executive) shares the research process behind the project, while the young Emma Galeotti (actress and content creator) brings Cristina’s words to life through a live reading, allowing the audience to experience the voice, ideas and strength of a leading figure of the Italian Risorgimento.
The conversations explore some of the fields in which Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso was ahead of her time, from communication and education to financial awareness and community support.

Born in Milan on June 28th, 1808, Cristina lived during the height of the Italian Risorgimento. In 1829, she became a political activist within the women’s section of the Carboneria. A few years later, she went into exile, establishing contact with the Italian liberation committee in Marseille in 1831. In 1832, she opened one of the most prominent cultural salons of the time in Paris and, upon returning to Italy, took part in the uprisings in Milan and Rome in 1848–49.
As a social activist, she established nurseries, schools, communal kitchens and housing for farmers in Locate, and created and directed military ambulances (a precursor to the Red Cross) during the siege of Rome. Her contribution as a writer, journalist and publisher was equally significant. From 1845 onwards, she founded newspapers and periodicals which she edited and directed between France and Italy.
An avid traveller and entrepreneur, she established an agricultural enterprise in Cappadocia in 1850 and travelled through the Middle East as far as Jerusalem in 1852.
The statue, marking a significant milestone, depicts Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso as interpreted by sculptor Giuseppe Bergomi, based on the iconographic documentation collected by Fondazione Brivio Sforza. It was installed in Piazza Belgiojoso, a characteristic corner of 18th-century Milan, just a short distance from the Duomo and Piazza della Scala.
