Founded in 2017, the Thalia Quartet brings together four young musicians trained at leading European conservatories (Basel, Brussels, Strasbourg, Paris). The quartet quickly had the opportunity to perform in major French venues such as the Philharmonie during the Concerts Prélude à l’Orchestre de Paris, as well as at the Auditorium de Lyon and the Auditorium de Flaine during the Musique à Flaine festival. In 2018, the quartet also played at the national tribute ceremony for Simone and Antoine Veil upon their entry into the Panthéon.
Following the advice of great quartets such as the Danel, Ysaÿe, Belcea and Volta quartets, and artists such as Tabea Zimmermann, Eric-Maria Couturier and Gabriel Richard, the Thalia Quartet decided to continue its musical and artistic research in order to promote the string quartet repertoire with rigour, depth and sincerity. It tackles essential works ranging from Haydn to Dvořák and Schubert to Webern, while maintaining a particular interest in the creation of contemporary repertoire. Since 2023, the quartet has been performing works by composers such as Thierry Machuel, Vincent Portes, Sami Naslin, and Anthony Laguerre.
In June 2023, the Thalia Quartet obtained two master’s degrees in chamber music (specialising in string quartet) at the CNSMD in Lyon with Yovan Markovitch (Danel Quartet), Agnès Sulem (Rosamond Quartet) and Fabrice Bihan (Debussy Quartet), as well as at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet) and Anton Kernjak.
In 2024, the Thalia Quartet was awarded the Grand Prix du Jury in the chamber music category at the Fanny Mendelssohn International Competition. The Thalia Quartet is supported and accompanied by Proquartet, the European Centre for Chamber Music, which aims to promote the string quartet and broaden its audience.
For its 2026–2027 season, the quartet is supported by Le Dimore Del Quartetto, an organisation whose mission is to promote chamber music and cultural heritage around the world.
