Le Dimore del Quartetto

The Castello Secco Suardo is made up of a group of structures built around a central rectangular courtyard. The grand entryway is on the western façade, which faces the gardens (redesigned in the late 18th century as a botanical garden, including several rare and valuable species of trees and plants) and a fifteenth-century family chapel.
The building complex was originally a small farming town, with walls erected in the thirteenth century. After passing through numerous hands, the Castello became the property of the Secco-Suardo family in the fifteenth century.
Today the Castello remains their family residence and the headquarters of the Giovanni Secco Suardo Association along with its library, study center and database library of the national archive of Italian art restoration, and of the Committee for the Castello di Lurano, which leads field trips for elementary school students and educational workshops for secondary schools, concerts, and cultural events. The interior of the residence also hosts receptions for weddings, christenings, baptisms, first communions, business dinners and birthday celebrations.

Giambattista Cremonesi, in “Corsa a Lurano” published in the “Strenna italiana per l’anno 1842”, narrates his experience at Castello di Lurano where Bartolomeo Secco Suardo continued to take care of the botanical garden created by his father Girolamo at the end of the 18th century.

For more than 500 years the Secco Suardo family has lived in the Castello di Lurano, once a border place between the Venetian Republic and the State of Milan, following the destiny of the Castle, trying to preserve this house much loved by the whole family with daily commitment. Since 1991, Lanfranco has been directing the Giovanni Secco Suardo Association, Study Center for the Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Heritage, named after his ancestor Giovanni, one of the fathers of the Italian restoration. The Association has been managing the Historical Archive of Italian Restorers for twenty-five years and keeps the archives of the restorers both physically and in an online database. It also carries out projects in Europe and in developing countries.
