Le Dimore del Quartetto

OUR HISTORY

A WINNING COMBINATION

“I became fascinated by the sound of the string quartet about twenty years ago, almost by accident and immediately felt a need to disseminate this musical genre, with the certainty that anyone could fall in love with it under the right conditions.
The string quartet consists of two violins, a viola and a cello: four instruments which are capable of reproducing the range of colors of an entire orchestra.

While an orchestra is led by a conductor who establishes the interpretation, in a quartet the four “voices” are unique, distinct, and interweave with each other in a language that is the profound and well thought-out expression of the four performers.

I tried to understand why, on one hand, there is an army of young musicians who today are still devoted to this musical genre, which demands incomparable dedication and sacrifice, while, on the other, there is a shrinking and older audience who shows interest in it.
The answer came to me almost immediately: chamber music, and especially the quartet, should be listened to in an intimate setting, because it is an immersive experience of listening, watching and participating.

Belinfante Quartet (Netherlands)

Only in this way can this musical genre be appreciated and understood by a wider audience. This is why it is called chamber music.
But for what chambers did this musical literature appear that thrived so much that thousands of concert societies sprang up all over Europe?
Aristocratic residences had great halls and music rooms; concerts were part of the life of the court musicians performed creating a direct contact with the audience. Europe is dotted with Historic Houses, which are part of the identity of our territory but today are often empty and separated from the activity and life of the community. So I thought to connect, or rather re-connect these two worlds: Historic Houses and String Quartets, so that the needs of the former become resources for the musicians and vice versa, in a circular economy.

And so in 2015 Le Dimore del Quartetto was born, the first European network of historic houses that offer artistic residencies to young string quartets in exchange for a concert.

It all began almost as a game, with phone calls to a few friends who were willing to give the idea a try. The response was incredible: overcome the first perplexities, the enthusiasm was passed by word of mouth from home to home, from quartet to quartet, and it brought together the first partners through whom the network began to develop organically.”

Francesca Moncada di Paternò, founder of Le Dimore del Quartetto

The secret recipe for this story? Sometimes even the oldest resources, when creatively combined, can create a highly innovative and unique project.
