On the hill of Umbriana at the edge of the ancient centre of Almenno San Salvatore, the Convent of San Nicola and Villa Vitalba Lurani Cernuschi stand, surrounded by centuries-old vineyards.
The Convent of San Nicola was built at the end of the 15th century, when a plague epidemic led the citizens to vow to erect a chapel. The project turned into the construction of a church and convent dedicated to Santa Maria della Consolazione within a few years.
The villa opens towards the park with a wide, strictly symmetrical, tripartite façade. Some of the rooms in the east wing have ceilings with the underlying high fascia richly decorated in polychrome tones. Of particular interest is a room with walls and ceilings airily decorated with exotic landscapes and animals painted by Quirino Salvatoni.
The English-style garden is enlivened by several statues including three grotesque dwarfs attributed to the sculptor Pirovano. Tall plants, most of them centuries old, crown a large lawn that extends to the villa.
