ABITO

CULTURE AT SCHOOL FOR RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP

A project of civic education for students of the middle school

Abito is a civic education path that accompanies middle school students in a journey towards responsible citizenship, through the universal languages of art and culture.

Abito “uses” tha languages of art and culture to talk with young students about topics that directly concern them, in a perspective of genuine equality: fight stereotypes and build a citizenship that is attentive to the individual growth, respectful of other people and active in the construction of collective occasions of relationships.

Abito makes the students responsibly protagonists in an inspiring, enriching and intelligent learning path.

Abito is the occasion to make them discover the role of cultural and their functioning in society.

We call it Abito because…

The Italian word “Abito” has different meanings on which the projects is inspired and questions itself:

  • from the Latin habĭtus -us, habere in the sense of “behaving”
  • the Italian verb abitare means “to live”, “inhabit”, being in the world and feeling at ease in a place
  • abito also means “dress”
  • abito in the sense of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes
  • abito in the sense of “habits” and at times “stereotypes”
  • abito in the sense of posture, in the way of being in the world

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF ABITO

A femminist project thought by a group of cultural institutions governed by women that have at heart the development of an equal society. A project that takes care of relationships and their quality.

A project thought together. Each institution involved has dedicated time and attention to thinking a shared and interconnected project, that preserves and promotes variety and peculiarity of each participant.

The result is a civic education path that:

  • promotes different artistic langueges
  • promotes the transformative capacity of arts and culture, and puts it at the service of young people and of the City
  • ties together past events to contemporary topics
  • is the occasion to discover and guide one’s own city and the cultural organizations under a different perspective

A project for everybody, built by cultural institutions together with teachers and professors, starting from the needs and citizenship requests of teenagers. Abito is scalable in terms of number of schools and organizations involved.

For a teenager, the school is a fundamental place of construction and experimentation of citizenship. Middle school, in particular, represents a “bridge” between childhood and middle school in which young people find themselves for the first time in the position of taking conscious decision, important for their personal and professional future.

ABITO'S PROMOTERS

The typical activity of cultural organizations is to build imaginaries; through the artistic languages, those who “make culture” guide the society’s gaze, stimulate reflections that bring change, use past experiences to transform and make them present.
